
PAOLO BIRRO
Born in Noventa Vicentina (VI) in 1962.
In 1987 he achieved the Vicenza Conservatory's
Diploma supervisored by Maestro Carlo Mazzoli,
obtaining top marks. In the the same year he
decided to dedicate himself entirely to jazz music
beginning to perform beside several italian and
foreign musicians: Lee Konitz, Ruddd Brink, Scott
Hmilton, Gary Bartz, Steve Grossman, Art Farmer,
Johnny Griffin, Ray Martilla, Gianni Basso, Hal Stein,
Enrico Rava, Gianni Cazzola, Maurizio Caldura, Erwin Vann,
Claudio Fasoli and many others. Some of his collaborations
turned into discographic productions: with Pietro Tonolo
("Simbiosi" Splas(h) '95), Marco Tamburini ("Trip Of Emotion"
Nel Jazz'96), Klaus Lessmann ("Goodbye And Hallo" Samjazz'92),
Stefano Benini and Nicola Stilo ("Flute Connection" Splas(h)'95,
Marco castelli ("Passat" Splas(h)'93), Massimo Salvagnini and
Lee Konitz ("Very Fool" High Tide'93), Piero Odorici ("Panarea"
Jazztoday'98), Tiziana Ghiglioni ("Battisti!" Philology'98).
In 1992 he formed the Trio with Sandro Gibellini and Mauro
Negri, winning with them The Barga International Jazz Award;
he then released "Funny Men"(Le Parc'93) and "The Tender Trap"
(Velut Luna'97). The following year he joined The Emanuele
Cisi's Quartet, with whom he recorded an album as well
("May Day" '97). In 1995 he released the first CD under his
name ("Fair Play" Flex Records), playing in Trio with
Marco Micheli and Francesco Sotgiu.
In 1996 is awarded as best new talent during The Top Jazz'95
Referendum Issued by Musica Jazz Magazine. In 1997 he collaborated
with the composer Carlo Boccadoro on musics for ballet committed
by La Scala Theater of Milan and he began to cooperated with the
austrian flute player Gunther Wehinger for his project "European
Double Quartet" . In 1998 Velut Luna Productions releases "Capo D'Astro"
a Paolo Birro's solo album. The last job (1999) is "Vivo Sognando"
recorded with Massimo Salvagnini for Velut Luna and entirely dedicated
to Carlos Jobim's compositions.
