
MASSIMO CANTINI
drummer born in Olbia (Sassari) in 1970.
He begun playing the clarinet with the band
of his community when he was eleven, passing on,
soon later, to drums. In 1993 he attended in Ozieri
(Sassari) a clinic with the drummer Salvatore Corazza.
He then moved to Siena to attend the improvisation
courses given by the Siena Jazz Association, studying
with M° Francesco Petreni and attending the courses of
ensamble music with R. Manetti, K. Lessman, F. Spinetti
(Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel) and F. Petreni. In 1999
he partecipated to a formation course for theatrical music,
sponsored by the European Community, led by the composers
G. Schiaffini and S. Marcucci. In 1999 and 2001 he has been
attending, at Siena Jazz, the couses of high qualification
for trio, given by Stefano Battaglia, Paolino Dalla Porta
and Fabrizio Sferra. In 2001 he has been partecipating to
the workshops with Elvin Jones and Marco Tamburini. He is
now teaching drums and ensamble music at the "Scienza e Arte"
Music School in Perugia and he is regularly performing at the
Contrappunto Jazz Club in Perugia. He is collaborating for the
ensamble music course at the Singing and Improvisation Department
given by Fabrizia Barresi at Siena Jazz. In May 2002 he won the
3° competition "Genova Jazz" with Alessandro Giachero on piano
and Luca Necciari on bass. With the same band in July he obtained
the Special Mention at "Barga Jazz 2002". In November 2002 he won the
international competition "Incroci Sonori" in Moncalieri (Torino).
Nowadays Massimo Cantini is touring and performing with various
jazz groups (trio, quartet) and with the G. O. P. Big Band directed by
K. Lessman, recording the homonymous CD, released for the Siena Jazz Records.
He has been collaborating with K. Lessman, N. Gori, G. Stracciati,
J. Mulholland ( teacher at the Berklee School in Boston), Motus Danza.
He is even working for his next CD release that will be published
in spring 2003
