
GIAMPIERO BURZA
was born in Lamezia Terme (Italy) in 1966.
When he was 12 years old he began studying guitar,
touched by Blues and by the most various styles of
American music. The very first years of his musical
path are signed by the golden age of the 60's American
west-coast. After classical studies and a classic
guitar diploma, in 1987 Giampiero moved to Rome where
he joined the music school in Testaccio to study Jazz
guitar with Roberto Nicoletti, Nino De Rose and Danilo Terenzi.
Love for acoustic music lead him to graduate in Musicology
at the University of Bologna writing a thesis on
country-bluegrass guitar in the 50's-70's.
Another important step in the definition of his
musical background was marked by the study of Celtic,
Irish and folk music. In the meantime he deepened
his love for Jazz and Brazilian music participating
and collaborating to several guitar stages with
(in chronological order): Joe Diorio, Mike Stern,
Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Pat Martino, Bruce Forman,
Mick Goodrick, Toninho Horta. He specialised in jazz
music through the teachings of two of the most remarkable
Italian jazz guitar players: Tomaso Lama and Gigi Cifarelli.
In 2001 he participated to the International Guitar Seminar
at the Columbia University in New York (USA) to study with
the folk -blues guitarist Woody Mann.
Since 1996 Giampiero has been teaching guitar, music
theory and jazz theory in public and private schools.
In 1998 his first CD was published:
"Giampiero Burza - Mood Latino" (Java Records 1001).
In 2001-2002 he held a series of seminars in Bologna
with the title "Travelling through American and British
music of 1960-1980". He played with several jazz musicians
as Claudio Fasoli, Furio di Castri, Martin Joseph, Giulio
Capiozzo, Paul Jeffrey... Since 1987 he has been practising
an intense concert activity in Italy and abroad as
leader in various bands.
