Sandro Gibellini

SANDRO GIBELLINI Self-taught guitarist. After his first experiences with rock and blues, he dedicates most of his time to jazz. He attendes The Nino Donzelli's Centro Di Studi Musicali at Cremona in 1979 and in the same year he has his first jazz experiences partecipating in Gianni Cazzola's Quintet and colaborating with Pietro Tonolo. From 1980 onwards he playes with many Italian musicians (Gianni Basso, Massimo Urbani, Luigi Bonafede, Larri Nocella and others). In 1983 he attendes the Zagabria Festival with Francesca Oliveri and, in the same year, he playes together with many American musicians passing through Italy such as Lee Konitz, Mel Lewis, Al Grey, Dave Schnitter Sal Nistico, Steve Grossman, Lew Tabackin and Jimmy Owens. With the latter, he partecipates at the Pori Festival in Finland. From'84 until '91 he takes part in the big band at RAItv of Milan, playing with musicians such as Gianluigi Trovesi, Sergio Fanni, Leonardo Prete, and others. In '86 he played in France with Dado Maroni, Jimmi Woodie and Alvin Queen. He then joins the Tullio De Piscopo Quartet, where he partecipates at the Sanremo Jazz Festival and the Roma Jazz Festival(special guest Woody Show) and at the Umbria Jazz Festival. In 1987, playing with the EBU big band, he partecipates at the Amiens(fra) Jazz Festival. Between'88 and'89, he playes in the quintet "Reunion" with Franco Testa, Pietro Tonolo, Danilo Rea, and Roberto Gatto (releasing a CD: Flight Charts And Planes). In '90 he joins the big band "Keptorchestra" led by Marcello and Pietro Tonolo, including some of the best Italian musicians as Marco Tamburini, Roberto Rossi, Mauro Negri, Bruno Marini and many others. In 1991 he participates in the national jazz orchestra. In 1992 he releases the CD "Funny Men", playing in trio with Mauro Negri and Paolo Birro. The first CD under his name is "Felix", recorded in 1990 but released in 1993, with Piero Leveratto and Alfred Kramer. In 1995 He playes with Gerry Mulligan and in'96 he releases "La Banda Disegnata" with his band. In January of '97 is invited to the "Midem" of Cannes representing Italy among the best Guitarists of Europe.In 1997 he records along with Larry Schneider,Andrea Dulbecco,Dodo Goya and John Arnold"Summertime in Sanremo" . In 98 the release of "The Tender Trap" with Mauro Negri and Paolo Birro. In 99 the release "You and the Night and the Music" with Ares Tavolazzi and MauroBeggio From 99 he colaborates with Barbara Casini on a progect dedicated to Jobim.Working with Casini and Lee Konitz he records a CD for the philolgy.In America in March of 2000 he plays in New York and Durham at the North Caroline Jazz Festival.In December of the same year he is invited,along with the trumpet player,Fabrizio Bosso at the international jazz festival of Havana (Cuba)where he plays with Kenny Barron, Ronnie Cuber,Giovanni Hidalgo,Chocho Valdez and the Irakere As a teacher he has held many clinics together with musicians such as Carl Anderson, Buster Williams ,Ben Riley and Rachel Gould. He has also colaborated with Bruno Lauzi,Fabio Concato,also playing on several discs of Mina.
