At number 900 in Venice's neighborhood of San Polo, one can breathe the
air of another era, be swept into another time. Dark wood, warm reds ambers
and golds. Antique instruments and furniture. Black and white photography
of the late and great jazz musicians. Piano, bass, drums and sax: the
sounds of jazz. The irrisitable smell of piping hot pizza fresh out of
the brick oven. The
moment one enters Jazz Club 900 their mood calms and they are transported
into a place that could be in Greenwich Village, or a nightclub in Paris,
but they find themselves here in Venice, where music and pizza go together.
The live music is what makes this place unique. Every Wednesday night
from October through April there is a live jazz concert, and one can wine
and dine and be exposed to fabulous entertainment. Artists come from far
and wide to play and exchange stories with eachother.
Some of the most important Italian jazz groups have passed through here,
played, and returned again. Even more international groups, from America
and other parts of Europe have come to play and then spread the word.
In little more than ten years, the Jazz Club 900 has become regarded as
one of the prime spots in Italy to listen to live music in an intimate
setting. The concerts are so warm and comfortable that the next best thing
to this place would be a private show at one's own home. Musicians, many
of whom are internationally reknown, choose the club as a new arena to
present themselves and promote their new work. New
artists send a resume and demo of their work in hopes of playing in such
a fantastic locale. Of course, the backdrop of Venice, the evenings by
the lagoon, adds to the enchantment one finds here. The Pizzeria has been
cited as one of the 100 most famous in Italy, ranking the quality of the
food as well as the quality of entertainment and atmosphere. It is open
everyday except Monday, it is best to make reservations for the night
of the concert, to guarentee a place, as seating can be limited.
